Preliminary results from POLMAR III (April 13-18, 1978) (SUROIT III) ATP, primary production and respiration rates in zooplankton. Complément à la Communication du Groupe Ecophysiologie du Centre Océanologique de Bretagne (SAMAIN et al.) ArchiMer
Hendrikson, P.; Hirche, H.j.; Junghans,, U..
ATP, primary production and respiration rates in seston, respiration rates in zooplankton have been investigated after the spill by "AMOCO CADIZ". Gross primary production seems to be similar to the normal situation. The rate of photosynthesis is lower at the "AMOCO CADIZ" station than at any of the others. Respiration rates are surprisingly high at the surface. ATP concentration exhibit an homogeneous pattern, zooplankton respiration are similar to the data obtained in Peruvian upwelled waters or in zooplankton culture. A more detailed computation of data will be necessary before concluding.

Riva, A.; Lelong, P..
The lagoon of Brusc located on the Mediterranean coast (VarFrance) is subjected to climatic and hydrologic particular conditions. The low values observed for nutrient into the sea water affect the evolution of phytoplankton. Thus chlorophyll concentration measured in the lagoon give an annual average of 0.42 mg. m-3 . The growth of two bivalves species : Cerastoderma glaucum and Venerupis semidecussata was compared between two stations where one population of each species are implanted. The culture of this molluscs is made in the lagoon and in outdoor pound dug on the old salt-pan near at hand. In the pound, subjected to natural climatic conditions, a great growth is noted for this two species. The growth rate appear better than the populations of the...

Plante-cuny, Marie-reine; Bodoy, Alain.
The primary production (phytoplankton and microphytobenthos) of a coastaL shallow water ecosystem (0.5 m) was investigated in two sandy areas, differing by their wave exposure. The physical and chemical parameters, the functional chlorophyll and pheopigments as well as the primary production were measured monthly, throughout a two-year study. The bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species in the sheltered station (RD), whereas Donax trlmcu/us inhabited the other station (DT) which was exposed to the open-sea waves. Microphytic biomasses were determined after extracting chlorophyll a and pheopigments in 90% acetone. by spectrophotometric measurements before and after acidification. Gross hourly primary production was estimated by measuring the...

Raillard, Olivier; Le Hir, Pierre; Lazure, Pascal.

Videau, Christiane; Ryckaert, Mireille; L' Helguen, Stéphane.
Phytoplankton distribution and primary productivity were investigated in the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel, France) in spring and early summer of 1992 and 1994. In 1992, the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton species was determined over the whole Bay of Seine. In 1994, species distribution and primary productivity were studied along the salinity gradient of the Seine plume and in the neighbouring marine waters. Phytoplankton distribution was characterised by the permanent diatom dominance from early spring to early summer. The spring bloom did not occur uniformly over the bay, but was initiated in the marine waters, in the middle of the bay and progressed towards the coast where it developed, in June, in the diluted waters of the Seine plume....

Hoch, Thierry.
This paper deals with a model of the pelagic ecosystem in the English Channel The model takes into account nitrogen biogeochemical cycle explicitly and indirectly phosphorus, silicon and carbon ones. The pelagic ecosystem is described precisely, on the one hand with the help of three phytoplanktonic compartments, and the other by considering the microbial food web. Primary production appears to be mainly controlled by stratification and turbidity, except in the Bay of Seine where high terrestrial nutrient inputs generate a sharp enrichment. Moreover, the model allows some general ecological conclusions to be drawn. From the simulation, it appears that inorganic nitrogen in the water column is mainly produced by an intense recycling. In accordance with in...

Conan, P; Pujo-pay, M; Raimbault, P; Leveau, M.
An estimation of the annual productivity in the Gulf of Lions has been made in the 0-100 m layer using a Let-Go system, with monthly measurements at a fixed station. A value of 140 to 150 g m(-2) a(-1) of C is found, of which around 75 % occurs in the upper 50 m. The seasonal production is described according to three distinct patterns during the two hydrological seasons: (1) variable production in winter; (2) surface bloom in late winter; (3) homogeneous and mean production in summer with a clear Deep Chlorophyll Maximum. The hydrological winter phase represented 60 % of total annual production. The seasonal duality of the hydrodynamic system and the mesoscale variations of the Northern Mediterranean Current account for the variability and the evolution...

Phytoplankton production in the Tagus estuary (Portugal) ArchiMer
Cabecadas, L.
Biomass and phytoplankton photosynthetic response were studied in the lower Tagus estuary weekly, and related to environmental conditions in February, March and April 1994. The Photosynthesis-Irradiance ((P-I)-I-B) relation was studied based on the light-saturated photosynthesis rate (P(B)m) and the light-limited initial slope (a(B)). The nutrient concentrations observed were high enough to be considered as not limiting phytoplankton growth. Tagus estuary phytoplankton seems, to a certain extent, adapted to high turbid conditions, being able to utilize the low light levels more efficiently, which was translated by high values of a(B) [0.10-0.20 mg C (mg Chl a)(-1) h(-1) (W m(-2))(-1)]; however, light seems to limit phytoplankton production in the water...

Zonal variability of plankton and particle export flux in the equatorial Pacific upwelling between 165° E and 150° W ArchiMer
Le Borgne, R; Rodier, M; Le Bouteiller, A; Murray, Jw.
Observations made during a "La Nina" situation (April-May 1996) in the equatorial Pacific upwelling, between 165 degrees E and 150 degrees W, show the classic deepening of hydrological isolines from east to west, resulting in zonal gradients for surface temperature and macronutrients. However, contrasting with such a gradient, no clear zonal variation could be seen for integrated planktonic biomasses and carbon fluxes, namely: chlorophyll a, bacterial abundances, particulate organic phosphorus, mesozooplankton ash free dry weight, primary production, and the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC). Moreover, mean values of these parameters along the zonal equatorial transect, are not significantly different from those of a 7-day-long time series...

Richard, Pierre; Blanchard, Gerard; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The trophic resources of cultivated mussel have! been characterized and their contribution to the food of these molluscs estimated in the Bay of Aiguillon (France) through the analysis of their natural C and N isotope composition. The contribution of terrestrial organic matter (δ(13)C = -27 to -34 %0) to mussel food resources is around 10% along the year, except in winter (15 10 30 %). A large seasonal variation is observed in the utilization of oceanic phytoplanktoll (δ(13)C = -19 to -21.5 %0) and of littoral benthic productions (microphytobenthos and phanerogame detritus,δ(13)C = -12.0 to -16.7 %0). Overall, the main food source of mussels is formed by benthic productions for molluscs grown on poles, in peculiar in the South of...

Loquet, N; Rybarczyk, H; Elkaim, B.
The Bay of Somme is the second ranked estuarine system, after the Seine estuary, on the French coasts of the Eastern Channel. The nutrient retention and regeneration capacities of this estuary have been calculated from continental and coastal hydrological data and from estimation of the residence time. Measurements at the mouths of the main rivers over a one-year period (from October 1994 to November 1995) were used to construct a budget of continental inputs which showed that the smaller rivers could, at times, be important contributors. The annual budget shows continental inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon and suspended particulate matter of 9 000 t . y(-1), 380 t . y(-1), 5 400 t y(-1) and 67 800 t . y(-1). Estimation of coastal inputs to the...

A relationship between deep-sea benthic oxygen demand and oceanic primary productivity ArchiMer
Christensen, Jp.
A diagenetic model of porewater O-2 was used to examine the relationship between organic carbon flux to the sediments and benthic oxygen demand (BOD). The model predicted that the organic carbon influx to sediments balances BOD as long as sediments are oxygenated. The critical rate occurs when O-2 at infinite depth disappears. With influxes exceeding the critical rate, the O-2 flux into the sediments via molecular diffusion can not consume all incoming organic matter, and anaerobic conditions result in BOD underestimating the carbon influx. Given that low rates of deep-sea BOD approximate the carbon influx below 9 g.C.m(-2).y(-1), a significant multilinear regression was found between published BOD, primary productivity (P-p, both in g.C.m(-2).y(-1))(,)...

Variability and seasonality of physical and biological fields at the Great Meteor Tablemount (subtropical NE Atlantic) ArchiMer
Mourino, B; Fernandez, E; Serret, P; Harbour, D; Sinha, B; Pingree, R.
Five oceanographic surveys were conducted at the Great Meteor Tablemount (subtropical NE Atlantic; 30.0 degreesN, 28.5 degreesW) throughout the 1992-1999 period tc, investigate temporal variability in the relationship between the physical structure of the water column associated with the seamount and phytoplankton biomass and/or production rates. Local increases in chlorophyll a, enhanced carbon incorporation rates and changes in phytoplankton species composition were associated with the seamount. These effects were subjected to a large degree of temporal and spatial variability both at seasonal and shorter time scales.

The works carried out can be divided in three main lines : design and management of experimental studies on primary production processes, macrophyte spatial distribution study and development of macrophyte and seagrass numerical models. In situ and in vitro experiments have been performed with the aim of studying the processes and the parameters involved in the photosynthesis-respiration system, as well as to establish the main biotic (self-shading effect, physiology of the photosynthesis, carbon, nitrogen and chlorophyll tissu contents) and abiotic (temperature, light and nutrients) factors controlling macrobenthic primary production. A seagrass ecosystem model based on nitrogen and oxygen fluxes has been developped. Model calibration and validation have...

Soletchnik, Patrick.
The Marennes Oléron Bay, the main French oyster culture basin, is an estuarine zone which is subject to anthropic pressure. Meteorological parameters such as temperature, insolation, pluviometry determine, for the most part, the water temperature and salinity conditions for each season and control the nutrient fluxes, as well as the primary and secondary production of the basin. The average air temperature (Météo -France) stays around 12.5°C between 1950 and 1980, then rises more than 1°C in 20 years. In those 50 years, average insolation drops from 198 hours to 176 hours, corresponding to an 11% decrease. Seasonal distribution of water inputs shows that spring pluviometry increased by 30% between the 1950's and the last two decades. Precipitations also...

Short-term variability of primary production and inorganic nitrogen uptake related to the environmental conditions in a shallow coastal area (Gulf of Trieste, N Adriatic Sea) ArchiMer
Cantoni, C; Cozzi, S; Pecchiar, I; Cabrini, M; Mozeti, P; Catalano, G; Umani, Sf.
Primary production (PP) and, nitrate (QNO(3)) and ammonium (QNH(4)) uptakes were measured together with other environmental parameters from October 1999 to February 2001 in the Gulf of Trieste (N Adriatic Sea). Their trends showed a high variability because of the combined effects of meteorological conditions, water circulation and river discharges. PP ranged from 0.2 to 1.5.9 mumol C dm(-3) d(-1), whereas QNO(3) varied from 0.8 to 442 nmol N dm(-3) d(-1), showing a trend similar to that of carbon basically ascribable to the autotrophic activity. QNH(4) ranged from 20 to 1308 nmol N dm-3 d-' and it reached the highest values during the declining phases of phytoplankton blooms, indicating that bacterial community can also be involved in its uptake....

Charria, Guillaume.
The marine phytoplankton in the ocean represents only less than 1% of global biomass. Phytoplankton performs half of all photosynthesis. This autotrophic biomass in ocean is then an essential element in the climate regulation through processes as carbon dioxide absorption during the photosynthesis. Therefore, we need to estimate precisely this biomass as well as the processes which affect it. Using remotely sensed data (altimetry and ocean colour) and a coupled physical/biogeochemical model (MERCATOR-OPA/NPZDDON), Rossby waves and their influence on phytoplankton biomass are specifically studied in the North Atlantic Ocean. Their features and their influences on surface chlorophyll concentrations were analysed. Through the different mechanisms identified,...

ArchiMer
Struski, Caroline.
To answer the questions of trophic capacity of the oyster bay of Marennes- Oléron, models were implemented since the 90s. The dynamics of the system is studied here by using a model 2D of hydrodynamism and transport with fine meshes (SiAM2D). The modelling and the analysis of existing data are used to answer the following questions: which factors control the primary production in the bay, in which scales of time act these factors, which link exists between pelagic and microphytobenthic productions , and which is the impact of oysters on the planctonic compartment SiAM2D serves as tool to couple models of pelagic and microphytobenthic primary production, and of filtration by oysters. The model of pelagic production is calibrated from measures of...
